As word has spread about the relevance of collagen as the main component of most connective and supportive tissues, as well as the fibrous component of tendons, ligaments, bones and cartilage, there are also more and more supplements containing collagen. However, most products contain only simple collagen hydrolysate.

Collagen hydrolysate is different from bioactive collagen peptides because it still has a completely non-specific compound of the containing amino acids. Your body must therefore at first break down the collagen hydrolysate and form specific amino acid chains, so-called peptides. This process is complex and requires various cofactors and enzymes. If an enzyme cannot be formed or if there is a lack of a cofactor, the process stops.

They are produced from simple collagen hydrolysate by using complex enzymatic cleavage bioactive collagen peptides®. ESSENTIAL MICRONUTRIENTS

Zinc for your skin

In stressful times and with increased requirements, it is often not easy to cover all micronutrients sufficiently. Active people have an increased need for various vitamins and minerals.⁴ Therefore, a well-founded and innovative collagen supplement should naturally contain selected micronutrients that are involved in collagen formation and contribute to the maintenance of healthy skin and connective tissue, in addition to bioactive collagen peptides instead of collagen hydrolysate.

Since zinc has been proven to contribute to protein synthesis and the maintenance of healthy skin, this trace element is definitely one of them.

If one considers that zinc absorption in men already decreases from the age of 25 with increasing age and according to NVS II, 66 % did not even reach the recommended daily supply at the age of 35 to 50, it becomes clear that this trace element can be a limiting factor. Since women require significantly less zinc, it is "only" 30% percent who do not reach the recommended daily supply.⁵ In normally active or inactive people. However, athletes have a higher requirement, which is why it can be assumed that suboptimal supply is even more common here.⁴

Irreplaceable cofactor

Vitamin C for collagen formation

Healthy collagen formation is essential for normal cartilage, bone and skin function. It is scientifically proven and confirmed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) that vitamin C contributes to collagen formation as an irreplaceable cofactor.

A lack of vitamin C causes poor elasticity in the skin, bones and cartilage.⁶

Although our average intake of vitamin C is sufficient, vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin with a half-life of only 13 hours.⁷ This means that without regular intake, bottlenecks can occur at times even with an average supply. In addition, sports and infections, for example, significantly increase the need for vitamin C.⁸

Increased demand

Copper for connective tissue

Copper is needed for the cross-linking of collagen and elastin, which is the basic requirement for maintaining healthy connective tissue. The correlation is proven scientifically and is also confirmed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).⁹

According to estimates, the recommended daily intake is reached on average, but here too, active people have an increased requirement due to the increased loss of minerals through sweat, among other things.⁴ Unfortunately, there are no precise findings on copper supply, as the supply status was not surveyed in past consumption studies.

For this reason, ESN Collagen Peptides contains copper in moderate doses. The amount is chosen in order to prevent a deficiency and an overdose even if the supply is already sufficient.
